Independent asset managers: also called «IAM», external asset managers or «EAM». Independent Swiss asset managers are «independent» from a bank. The client assets are still deposited in banks, the so-called depositary banks. There are more than 2,500 independent asset managers with an average of 3 – 4 employees. SRO: self-regulatory organisation. A majority of independent Swiss asset managers are members of a Swiss SRO that especially pays attention to the abidance to the Swiss Anti-Money Laundering Act.

FINMA: Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. Unlike Swiss banks, independent asset managers are generally not subject to FINMA. However, the SROs are subject to FINMA.
